For in the midst of conflict March 5, 2013

Preserve your deen (religious way of life) and Iman (faith)  when in conflict with your brother.

When a conflict with a fellow muslim or even non muslim arises we find it hard to hold back our anger, our tongue and to let go and forgive others.  We have all heard stories of brothers or even  2 tribes that had a conflict rise and to this day they are enemies.   This conflict can carry on for years or generations to the point people don’t even know what the original conflict was.  This is not the way of the believers nor is it the example the Prophet (Peace be upon him) gave us.    Look at the hadeeth and quran below and remember conflict is a test from Allah and we must strive to preserve our deen and iman when faced with conflict.   We all have had that moment after the fire was put out where we try to remember what ignited it in the first place and can’t remember.   It isn’t always that simple though, sometimes it pokes at us constantly and the pain can last for a long time.  Either way… getting  STUCK with the yuck of a grudge is the last thing we need to carry around or face our Lord with.

Let go and try to forgive.

  • Allah says: “.who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allaah loves Al-Muhsinoon (the good-doers).” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:134]
  •  “It is not proper for a man to keep away from his brother for more than three days, and then when they meet to turn their faces away from each other. The better of the two is the one who greets the other first.”   Hadith of Bukhari and Muslim, on the authority of Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari.
  • Sahabi Abu Darda (radiallahu ‘anhu) used to say: “Shall I not tell you about something that is better for you than charity and fasting? Reconcile between your brothers, for hatred diminishes reward.” (reported by al-Bukhari in Ad-Adab al-Mufrad)
  • Ibn Umar (ra) said: ‘The tongue of a man is entitled to be kept clean more than any other part of his body’ Al Hilyah Vol I p 307.

May the Qur’an and Sunnah be a guide and reminder for us in the midst of our everyday affairs.  Ameen.

For in the midst of conflict,

    Ones soul is at stake.
